Bird's Eye Maple is a unique figure occasionally found in Sugar Maple, which grows across northeastern North America. This occurs as the tree is attempting to get more sunlight, and starts multiple branch buds that don't mature. It is usually an off-white, cream color, with hints or golden hues. Use sealer to close the pores when finishing. Bird’s Eye Maple is a naturally figured form of Sugar Maple valued by knife makers, woodturners and woodworkers for its distinctive pattern of small swirling “eyes” throughout the grain. Each listing is for one 5" long 6/4 turning square. In turning-stock terminology, 6/4 represents a nominal 1-1/2" dimension. These are natural wood blanks rather than precision-machined dimensional lumber, so actual width and thickness can vary approximately +/- .060". Some pieces may measure slightly under 1.500". Natural variation is part of the material. Each block will differ in eye density, grain pattern, color and figure. As shown in the product photographs, some pieces may also have a small rounded or missing corner. This is normal for this type of turning stock. The strongest figure can occur near the outer portion of the tree, and retaining that desirable figured material can result in a portion of the natural outer contour remaining on the blank. Bird’s Eye Maple generally ranges from creamy off-white to light golden tones and can develop considerably more depth and contrast when finished. Suitable for knife handles, hidden-tang handles, woodturning, tool handles, small woodworking projects and other applications where naturally figured hardwood is desired. • NATURAL EDGES & CORNERS – Some blocks may have a small missing or rounded corner as shown in the product images. This is normal for natural turning stock and is not considered a defect. Highly figured wood is often found toward the outside of the tree, and preserving that figure can leave portions of the natural outer contour.
• HARD SUGAR MAPLE – Bird’s-eye is a naturally occurring figure commonly found in Sugar Maple. The wood is hard, dense and suitable for knife handles, tool handles, turning projects and other small woodworking applications.
• SOLD AS A SINGLE BLOCK – You will receive one Bird’s Eye Maple block. The photographs show representative pieces and the natural variation you should expect. No two blocks will have exactly the same figure, grain, color or edge condition.
