The Bendix starter drive forms part of the mechanical starting system between the starter motor and the engine-starting gear train. During starting, the compatible drive mechanism transfers starter-motor rotation through the starter gear system to crank the engine. A worn or damaged Bendix may contribute to slipping, grinding, intermittent engagement or a starter motor that spins without properly turning the engine.
